Crazy Cross Country Running!

Today I ran my first cross country run in Grenada!! It is a lot different to run here than it is to run in Canada:

In Grenada teachers let children run on roads. In Canada that would never happen unless the roads were closed and police were directing traffic. In Grenada the trails are a lot longer. My run was 12 kilometers! In Canada it is 2.2 kilometers for the cross country run. The kids here are faster. Here you are divided up into houses (red house is the best) and you run for your house not for yourself. In Canada we run for the school and for ourselves.

It was tiring but I had a lot of fun!

The Old Abandoned Airport

Today my family and I went out on a trip to the north point of Grenada.

My dad drove us to an Pearls airport that was abandoned during the revolution in 1984. This airport was the only airport in Grenada and is located in Grenville.

Today there were men shovelling gravel, but the main residents are cattle.

Since the airstrip was abandoned we decided to race down it. We got to 90 km which seemed really fast, but that is the normal drive speed from Brighton to Trenton.

There were two abandoned Cuban cargo planes. They were interesting to see. Lastly...

 

On some nights they hold....(pause for effect) Drag Racing!!

 

 

Beaches Galore!

In Grenada there are many, many beaches, in fact there are 52 beaches! Here are my top five beaches.

1) La Sagesse: A beautiful black sand beach with great waves for boogie boarding. There are very few people at this beach which makes it a lot more fun because it is not crowded. I walked the whole beach and it took about ten minutes to walk to the end. From St. George's it is about a 20 minute drive in a private car. I would recommend the beach farther away from the resort for strong swimmers only. The beach is very shallow so it would be good for children but only near the resort.

2) Magazine Beach: A white sand beach with great snorkeling very close to shore. It is a small beach but it has shade. There is hardly ever people at this beach even though it is one of the nicest, this might be because you need a car to get there. There is a restaurant called "The Aquarium" here which is part of a hotel. It is about a five minute drive from Maurice Bishop airport, you could definitely walk from the airport! I would recommend this beach for beginners to experienced swimmers. It is a very good beach for those who just want to relax too.

3) Pink Gin: This is a very small secluded beach with steep cliffs surrounding it. There is snorkeling at this beach but you have to go a ways out and isn't that good. It has a nice sandy bottom and your feet sink into the sand. this beach does require about a 5 minute hike in. It is also located across from Maurice Bishop Airport and next to Sandals La Source.

4) Grand Anse: This 3 mile long white sand beach is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the whole Caribbean. There are many hotels located along this beach, so it is perfect if you are staying in one and love to swim. Grand Anse is one of the only beaches that has a life guard during the cruise ship season (October-March). It also has change rooms and bathrooms if you come in from the roundabout. It also has parking. There is a good restaurant, Umbrella's, where you can get North American food. At the other end of the beach where the cemetery is, is the Food Fair where you can get local food.

5) Le Phare Blue: Has a teeny weeny beach. I like it because you can look at Calvigny island, the boats and the restaurant. The restaurant is very good, and the live music on Friday is amazing.



Beaches to avoid:
True Blue- It is really shallow and has lots of seaweed.


Pandy (at the end of my road)- It is good if you want to snorkel, but bad for swimming. There is a reef just a few feet out and it is hard to get over it without a mask.

BBC Beach because it had seaweed and sea snakes. It would be good if you just wanted to hang out on a beach though.
